Harry Baxter had always been a quick runner, but that was usually when he was outside on a grass football pitch in broad daylight. It was much harder to run in a concrete tunnel when it was dark and he couldnât see where he was going.
If he had been able to see where he was going then he wouldnât have spent all night in here trying to find his way out. He wouldnât have ended up being threatened by a scary man who looked like he was going to hurt him.
And he definitely wouldnât have had to run for his life like he was doing now.
âHurry!â called the woman who had just saved him a moment ago, and Harry ran in the direction of her voice, trusting her even though he had no idea who she was, simply because she had to be better than the person he was running from.
As he ran around yet another corner in this maze-like place, Harry saw the woman up ahead of him ushering him towards her, and he kept going until he found himself in a quiet hidey-hole where the woman pulled him back against the wall and put her hand over his mouth.
Harry wanted to scream, or fight, or run, but he was afraid, and he also knew that as scary as this situation was right now in this dark corner, it would be much worse if the man he was running from ever found him again.
A tense few seconds passed, and it seemed like the coast was clear until Harry suddenly saw a dark figure moving down the tunnel.
It was him.
He was looking for them.
But would he find them?
Harry held his breath even though he could barely breathe anyway with the womanâs hand over his mouth as he watched the figure move through the gloomy darkness, looking from left to right to try and spot them. If he was to find them in this hiding place, then they really were trapped because it would be impossible to get past him then. That was a terrifying thought, and Harry prayed that the scary man would just walk past and leave them alone.
Thankfully, after a few more nervous seconds, that was exactly what happened.
The man moved away down the tunnel, having failed to spot them, and Harry felt the woman he was with loosen her grip on him and remove her hand from over his mouth. Then she crouched down beside him and whispered into his ear.
âFollow me. Iâll show you how to get out of here.â
Harry nodded his head because he was too afraid to speak in case the man heard him, but then he realised that wasnât the best thing to do because it was too dark for the woman to have seen his nodding.
âOkay,â he whispered back as quietly as he could.
The woman left the hiding place before him and looked both ways down the tunnel before beckoning Harry to follow her, and he did just that, aware that she really was his best bet of making it out of here alive.
